Analyzing quotes...

Read the following quotation from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

You may well ask, “Why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches, and so forth?...Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored. My citing the creation of tension as part of the work may sound rather shocking. But I must confess that I am not afraid of the word “tension.” I have earnestly opposed violent tension, but there is a constructive, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth.
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", 1963

2. How is this connected to Gandhi's THREE components of "passive resistance"?

CRM and Non violence

Imagine that someone did something to you that was completely unfair. Let's say that this person is a store owner and would not allow you to come into her store because you were under the age of 18. She begins to yell at you and speak negatively about you "rugrats"... You say nothing offensive and ask to come in to by a bottle of water (you were really thirsty) but she calls the police to have you removed. Before the police come, she yells for her family and tells them that you tried to rob her and assault her because you were "young". The storeowners son, who is your age, charges at you...

1.Explain how you would handle the situation....in a "non-violent" manner. Would it be challenging? Explain?

2.What would be some important reasons NOT to react violently? Explain..

Eyes on the Prize documentary

During the next few weeks, you will view many disturbing events relating to the Civil Rights Movement. You may see people being treated unfair, beat and even murdered. You will also see people standing up to injustice, marching in large groups, singing, smiling, and shouting.

Why do you think it is important to learn about these disturbing events?

Diversity... (8E)

Diversity is defined as being a "range of different things". Some synonyms of diversity are: variety, mixture, assortment.

Why is "diversity" in a nation important? Explain both successes and challenges that arise when there is a diversity of people in a country.

Open Response Analysis 4

One perspective on race is that, it has no biological meaning. If you were able to turn a "white" and "black" person inside out, you would not be able to tell the difference. Another perspective that differs from that is, Race is like water and can take form on an object. The racists can decide what you are from, white to asian to aftrican american. These definitions are different becuse one believes that there is no trace of race, while the other tells ou race can take on any person. The definitions basically stand between race and no race.

Two different perspectives on race are one, "the only race is human" and second "race is based off of skin color." A person had said that the only type of race is humna race, because science has prove that we are 99.9% genatically identical. Our bodies are almost exact on the inside, but the outside of us are physically different. The second perspective "race is based of a color" which I believe is true. During slavery time there were whites & black only restrooms, diners, etc. If you looked at their skin you see why they were called white or black. These are only 2 perspectives there's plenty more thoughts on race, sorry I can't share them all with you.
