Now that you have witnessed the philosophy [idea] of "non-violence" in the 1960's, explain
1. How you feel about the actions of people in this film. (Be sepcific....people, places, events, etc..)
2. How is this connected to Gandhi's THREE components of "passive resistance"?

I feel that it was hard to see people get beaten without fighting back. To see how Young college students wanted to make a change and knew that they could be killed but they still fought back.To see all the violence and how they treated black people was like wow. Seeing the video i see different actions which changes alot on your perspective what you thought happen in the past thats different.
This connected to Gandhi's three components because most of them got beaten and didn't fought back. Seeing how much pain they been through they didn't. All the components fit from watching the video so far.
Katiria,
How do you think "non violence" helped the students reach their goal?
I feel very bad for the people in the film because they had no way to protect them selves as a human being they were treated like dogs and cats basically pets. They smashed them in the head with bottles they sprayed them with high pressured water and they burned down their bus. They did not only beatup the black people they beat up the white people to on the bus.
2.This is connected to gandhis three components because the people did not fight back they did not answer to the violence.
The people also got injury without a cry when the white man got 7 teeth broke. The people are also powerful because they took the humiliating when they sprayed them with the water holes in the middle of the streets when they were walking doing what ever they was doing.
1. I feel that it was wrong for the whites and the police t do that to the blacks because when the whites beat on that blacks couldn't do nothing about it. which is called(BEING ATTACKED AND NOT ANSWERING BACK). I had saw that 1 black man was holding on to the counter while a white man was beat on him and that is called (BEING INJURED AND NOT CRYING OUT).
2. This is connected to Gandhi's three components of passive resistance because the things that happened back in 1960's happened with Gandhi. I gave 2 examples in the first thing that I wrote.
1) When I sat there and which what happen in 1960s to people who hardly did any thing. I felt angry and was bad that the black didn't do anything back , but I understand that why they didn't fight back. And although they didn't fight back there were put in jail for just sitting there getting beat up. Like what they did do the mens that was sitting in the dinner and they got beat up.
2) It is connected to Gandhi's three components of "passive resistance in many ways. Like when the black were getting beat up the didn't "Raise no hand and allow violence to be done"
Jaylen, do you think the "passive resistance" approach worked?
1. I feel angry, sad, surprised about the actions of people in this film. On things that got me mad was the fact that sometimes when the whites was bettin' up the blacks some of the polices just stood there and watched, then they have the decency to come and arrest the "negro". I felt that they had courage and that they was hero's. Some people just look at them as "the black Americans who didn't fight back". They were more then that. I can't think of any human who has the heart to do that somebody that's just like them, they have the heart to kill kids. It really shows that they wanted what was best for us and that was to be able to live a normal childhood without discrimination. Now I appreciate it more.
2. This is connected to Gandhi's three components of "passive resistance". One of them was 'Injury w/ out a cry'. I think that this would've been the most difficult for them to do. While I was watching the movie and they was on the bus, and when they got out they was getting beating and didn't even lift up a finger. Some of them was even bloody. Another part was when they was in the restaurant and when the guys was getting betting up he just stood up from the group and went back to sit in the chair. They had a lot of courage in order to just sit there and let somebody beat you like a punching back and not being able to fight back.
Jaylen,
How do you think that they were able to take a beating without reacting violently? How do you think they prepared themselves mentally before they went in?
1. What i could say is simple WOW!!! The facts the emotions everything was just intense. I really don't understand how the people of color or the blacks in specific followed by Gandhi components. How can YOU or YOUR people get abused by whites and not do nothing about it. What i think the blacks should have done was go back to there country. While in the past they were pulled from there country as slaves they helped out the least you can do is show them some RESPECT. For example The four children who had got out the Sunday school to change into there robes happens to be they get BOMBED by the Ku Klux Klan. That is an outrage. I took this video to the head because it caught my attention.
2.All this is connected to Gandhi's components because they actually went threw with it. They did not fight back but took in all that was thrown at them. I think that's how its connected.
1. I feel angry, sad, & very hurt. Even though I am not them or there I feel all their pain and could see it through their eyes. A good example is the black college students who went to Burmingham, Alabama. as they arrive an explosive bomb was thrown inside the bus to hurt them. Also as they were in the school many of the white students said phrases like, "get out of here you don't belong here Negroes". No matter what they said the students stayed there ignoring every word the had heard. When they were in the cafeteria a bunch of white students were beating up a black student and he stayed holding on to the table and not doing nothing back. That was an example of Gandhi's component "Being attacked and never answering back","raise no hand allow violence to be done". After also getting beat up and hurt the student went back and sat on the table like if nothing happened which was another example of Gandhi's component "Injury without a cry". The student stated there being strong fighting for his rights that were being broken, as said in the 14th amendment that African Americans were given their citizenship. So they had the same rights that applied to the white people. But in the old days it depended on the color of your skin no matter what.
The way that i felt was mad that the blacks did not try to fight back at all when the whites were attacking them. As the film went on i started to understand why they did not fight back.
The way it is connected to Gandhi's three components are the blacks did not fight back. They did not answer with words or actions. They did not cry. Also they RAISE NO HAND AND LET VIOLENCE TO BE DONE.
I feel that the way we where treated back then was so wrong and that we where disrespected in a lot of ways not just by getting beat or getting killed, and ect. I feel that what black people did back then was hard because somebody punch you in the face it's going to be hard not to hit them back.I also feel that the black people where always somewhat scared of the whites because they always seemed stronger just because they where together, and never backed down. But I look at it as the situation being a segregated war between the whites and the blacks. And I see that the blacks where wining not just because there might have been more blacks than whites but because we where actually stronger no matter how hard we got beat we where still there having sit-ins and boy-cotts so in away we where and are still winners in this war. This is related to Gandhi's three components of passive resistance because the black people followed these components of passive resistance they where like rules to us because we followed them every single day.
1. I feel sorry for them. Though I feel proud of them. I feel sorry because they have to get beat for what they want. I feel proud for them because they had set their mind to something and didn't stop. Just like when they were at the table. They didn't get up and start to fight no matter how bad they wanted to. Even though the white man was saying get out of here. The black people stayed focus and kept a straight face the whole time.
2. This is connected to Gandhi's three components of " passive resistance" because they did all three. Even though they were being attacked. They never answered back by fighting or talking. Many of the black people their got injured with blood all over their face. Though they never wimped out and said forget it or its not worth it. For the last component being humiliated and never answering back. I am sure they was humiliated especially when they were eating. The white people keep on looking at them and saying things they don't want to hear. If you remember they call the black men boy.
Ms.Jackson
I think a way non violence helped the students reach their goal by experiencing what was happening and understand why was people doing this. To see how alot of people try to fought back and themselves which teaches a way how to stop violence or make it into non violence??.
I feel really mad because people will get beat up to death and people will site and watch the show like for example in the cafeteria they all will get beat up to death and they will not fight back or say word or cry. But the thing that make really mad is that they get all of those attack and some of them get kill and then put them in jail how could they do that to does people for example those collage student they will kill because white people will cause accident and they will put booms to kill all of them and they will get beat up to death and then they will put all of them in jail that was really selfish of them. All of this connected to Gandhi's three component because if you were really seeing the movie and you will look at those people faces they will not say nothing or fight back or cry I feel really mad from those connection because they are doing all of those things but they get put in jail and get beat up more .
First of all this movie exemplified the three concepts of Passive Resistance which are:
- Being attacked/Being humiliated and answering nothing
- Injury without a cry
- Raise NO hand, allow violence to be done
In the winter of 1960, when the college students went down to protest and demonstrate sit-ins they were being obedient. They were being dragged and pulled off of the counters where they sat for protest and still they "Raised NO hand, allow violence to be done". They had bottles smashed at their faces
but still they were "Being attacked/Being humiliated and answering nothing". They sacrificed their all for the "prize". Which was to get our rights back. Innocent blood was spilled and still they stopped at nothing, there pride was damaged and that took pride.
I feel like because they wasn't fighting back and not showing any feeling, the people got madder and did it worse. But some of the time it did work but in a way the white people just kept doing it over and over. And I couldn't began to how bad it was for the polices just to stand there and watch like it was some kind entertainment.
Brianna,
You said that the people who were being beaten couldn't do anything because they couldn't fight back. What effect do you think this had on the people who were beating them?
I feel that these white folks treated people of color different because of there kin color. you know that saying actions speak louder than words well i think that the whites where getting upset because they told the blacks they wasnt going to eat because they(the whites) wans't going to feed then and im guessing when the whites said that they thought the blacks was gonna just up and move but when they didn't the whites wanted to fight and beat on them so what im tying get at is when the whites felt the need to kick the blacks out the blacks didn't listen so they started beating on us colored folks and when they saw that we wasnt fighting back they got more upset so the colored's action was not fighting back and instead of saying we ain't leaving they decided that they was just going to stay seated.
what I notice is that teh colored folks there prize was making there mark what i mean by that is they wanted it to be known that we are humans just like you we deserve the same benifits as you or any other person wo why cat we eat and the way if relates to gandhi is because they was able to endour the pain and actually sit there and not fight back as the colored folks where beating them.
Ms.Geralda 8f
Jesse, what did you want the students to do? Why? Explain how their actions would have changed the situation..
Yes ms.jackson i think i think it worked because they did not fight back and the attackers did not keep on hitting them because they wasnt fighting back so basically it worked.
mr.R i think they was able to take a beating like that because they possibly knew that if they fought back they would have maybe gotten killed or more hurt then they already did. They probally prepared by saying to them selves that "dont let anybody get to you you are the bigger person".
Tremain, I think that they would want you to feel proud, instead of feeling sorry.
I feel that the actions in this film didn't have to be there if everything was equal back than. I like how the blacks were getting beat and killed just for seating in a whites seat. Its not fear that the whites have so much power over the blacks in the film. In the film when the bar or cafe eating they have sections where people seat so a black sat in white section and got beat but as he was getting beat he was still holding on to the table. He was being attack and not/never answering back.
2.)This is connected to Gandhi's three components because they were being attacked and not/never answering back. I say this because they allowed them to beat on them and not do anything back to defend their self. this also connect to "RAISE NO HAND,ALLOW VIOLENCE TO BE DONE". For them to do that it took a lot of pride to sit there and let someone beat on you.
1.) I feel as if the people who were against the whole idea of African-Americans gaining their rights back over did the situation with the actions they took when they could've been a privet racist. Like the bus fire in 1961, they didn't have to set that bus on fire they just did it because they were soulless, incersideate creatures, or like the beatings in Birmingham in 1961 they didn't have to beat these people they were just doing what they thought was right not just for them but the people they were fighting for.
2.)This is connected to Gandhi's passive resistance components because with each clip they showed neither one of the victims fought back, raised a hand to indicate they were going to fight back, nor did they just give up and leave they stood their ground, fought back (non-violently), and kept their pride through the humilation.
To answer you Mr. R, I think that it had a lot of affect. Because they wasn't fighting back or showing emotions the white people just kept hitting them harder until they was tiered of hitting them.
1. I feel that it was sad to watch what they did to those kids it wasn't right for them to treat the kids that way. Now if that occurred during this time it would be hard for not to hit the person back. This is also hard to see young kids get beaten and they not hitting back. That is really hard to believe.
2. This is connected to Gandhi's three componets of passive resistance when the guy got some of his teeth falling out he was injured with out a cry. Also in the diner when they were beating them they didn't even fight back.
1. There are many emotions i feel about the actions in this film. One emotion i feel is sadness. I say this is because i think its not fare that the black people should be getting beat for what they believe in. Imagine that were there in the past fighting for what you believe in you wouldn't want anyone beating on you. I also felt very angry in one part of the film. This part was based on 4 girls killed by the k.k.k during attending Sunday school. I think thats wrong because they were doing nothing wrong or what the whites considered wrong. These 4 young girls was just going to church for the glory of god. I can imagine the faces of the parents and all the sadness and rage. I felt confident when there was a black man protesting for what he believes in although he gets beat he still gets up. This makes me feel confident because it shows no matter what people say or do you'll always be strong and can make a change. Threw out this with the rules of Gandhi they had made a big impact and a change for us in the future.
2. This film is connected to Gandhi's three components of passive resistance because they didn't fight back in a negative way. During the film i noticed that they not answer back when being attacked, They used one of Gandhi's other rules injury with out cry, and also Raise no hand allowed.
Mr.R
The effect that I think that had on the people who were beating on them is that they just wanted some respect so they think that they could just beat on the blacks because they wasn't gonna fight back. They had there eyes on the prize.
I was expecting the students to fight back but now that i think about it, it would have the situation worse. The students would have got into more trouble also more people in the bar would have jumped and started beating the students.
Misarelys,
I agree, it is a challenge not to fight back, but it was important.
Tania,
You said that you felt hurt by what you saw. Do you think the people who did the beatings felt bad later especially since they were beating people who weren't fighting back?
How i feel for those people that went through that stuff is so indescribable. Went they went is hard it makes me think how grateful I am that those stuff aren't as violent as before when there were segrigation. In the film they stood up what they believe is right! They were being the "BIGGER AND BETTER PERSON" and that's what counts the most. It makes them look intelligent, The face expression was like a big WOW for me because I know If I was there and to go through those things I would SOOOOO weak. I would humble. But them, those people they were strong they had the strength enough to go have a sit in and places they thought was unfair especially at the at the diner, where college students that had a sit in and people from the neighborhood just came yelling at them, throwing food at them, and just beating them up for a reason they don't have. And the worse part is they're the ones whom gets arrested! And that's not fair. They just think there bigger and they have more control then they do but the truth be told I think those people that just didn't respond, didn't show emotion there the one's with the most power because they didn't focus on the "prize" and eventually it probably not exactly then, but the more fought back in a way that didn't show any violence was a success. Even though these people loss things like there pride, they're dignity, and they're loves ones they got what they wanted, they showed them what they are capable of and I RESPECT THAT!!
It showed a lot, they people in the move the African-American/black, some white people didn't cry when they were beaten and made those people feel stupid, they didn't respond back, and they did nothing to show violence at all and those are what Gandhi told his people in india to do. And that made a huge point.
Wow!
I felt so disappointed && offended in how somebody else can treat other people like that. They treated us[BLACK PEOPLE]like we was sugar honey ice tea. That really pissed me off to the point i felt like going in the t.v && just beating them up my own self.
I felt like i was there with the black people just sitting there at the dinner minding my own business.
Then all of a sudden somebody else just comes and mess with you out of the blue.
Like really that just killed me in the inside how us[BLACK PEOPLE]can just sit there && let other people[WHITE PEOPLE]just beat them up like that. Then after they had 2 go 2 jail for nothing that they didn't even do.
&& awww man what really hurt my heart was when they burn down the church and those innocent people died how can they do such a thing like that...all i can say is that if that was me back then && somebody burn my child up i don't care it on && popping.
This connected to Gandhi's 3 components because most of them got beaten up && what also shock me was that a white man was beaten u 2 && he nearly lost all of his teeth. And plus also the black people didn't fight back they just sit there and let them beat them up with a straight face.
