Music and Justice

Some believe that musicians and other entertainers who are famous should NOT use their career to protest against social injustices. What do you think? Give examples.
Things to think about:

1. Think about John Mellencamp and his song "Jena, take your nooses down" why would people be upset at the fact that he made this song?
2. What if someone used their popularity to speak out against an issue that you morally do not believe in? Would you feel the same?

I think that he should be able to use his music to express himself that is what music is used for to get things off your mind and express that topic so he was right to express himself about the Jena six case. I would have done the same thing if i was the race that was being terrorized i would fight for what is right.

some thing that i think my have triggered people was that he said "Everyone needs to know their place
And here we thought this blackbird was hidden in the flue" im trying to find out what he meant by hat did he mean that the black students need to stay or know there place.

Jahi tell how you agree with me in what ways.

FOR THE FIRST QUESTION I THINK THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE UPSET ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY MIGHT THINK THAT HE IS GOING AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY USED TO DO BACK IN THE DAY. SECOND, I WOULD NOT FEEL THE SAME BECAUSE WITH THEM USING THERE POPULARITY IT MIGHT SEND THAT GOOD MESSAGE OUT QUICKER AND IN A MORE UNDERSTANDING WAY.

I believe that you should be abke to use music to express your self because being an artist does not make you any different. He is still a human being should be free to show his feelings.

I THINK THAT THE SONG THAT JOHN Mellencamp WROTE IS A GOOD SONG AND I Don't KNOW WHY people awre protesting

Anonymous said...

I think that anyone is allowed to protest even musicians they might not agree with what happen people might be saying that because there racist and don't want people to help or agree with the music writers they might be mad that the musicians

1. I think people would be upset about the song because... I can't really explain it but I can tell you in another story. Do you guys remember the flight 89 thingymajig? People can be hurt by past events such as the Jena Six incident.I think the song should be removed too.

2.If someone did this, i think they are just abusing their power.

I think that people shouldn't use it because many people don't agree with some stuff. For example if the people who are against an issue have somebody famous to protest with them then they will be heard. So it's no fair. Like the song that John Mellencamp did. People got upset because he was famous and he made a song about it. Many people didn't agree and the mayor was upset because of that. I think that because the major was white and he agreed that the Jena six should be put in jail. The mayor didn't support the Jena six. I also think because the singer is white and the mayor didn't expect that he would make a song to support the Jena six..I really wouldn't feel the same because everyone has a right to express there feelings. And I think that it really doesn't matter if you famous of not, if your black or white.

People would be upset because they might be understanding the song in the wrong way.The reason why I think that it would be wrong because they are basically lying to you and to the community about the truth.

i think John Mellencamp's song is true because it's very wrong to hang nooses from trees weather you're white or black nobody should do it. Also i do think that famous people should use there fame and poppularity to help the situations in Louisiana because the more they support the better the chances are of the situation getting better

I think that John Mellencamp should be able to write or sing his music. He just wanted to express his feeling which he did.I think that he did the right thing, because I would of express how I felt about Jena Six.

John mellencamp song ,Affects alot of the community's of Jenna,LA. But I dont know why people would be upset of the fact that he made that song. If he is writing music to express his perspective i think its a good thing. If people are arguing because he is white,i think thats wrong.Everyone has the right to speech there minds about whats going on in the united states and other pla ce.This is my perspective.

I agree with melissa because the major was mad because the white male singer made a song supporting them and something like that wasn't expected from him so i got him mad.
It's not right because some people have singers to support them but then it is because it's freedom of speech your voice need to be heard.

I think they have ever right to protest and use there music career to trigger what is right. They have a better change of people listening to them because a lot of people know them so it's right for musicians and entertainers to do that. There not being fair about it because he's "white" but if it was someone black or so would it be different? I think so, If people don't like it they should make so much of a deal out of it. Cause if it's so much of deal to have a song why isn't it about the protesting and not going to school.

I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD USE THEIR CAREER IN THIS BECAUSE THATS HOW THE WORD WILL GET AROUND TO EVRONE BECAUSE ONE PERSON CANT TELL MILLIONS OF PEOPLE BY VOICE.

It that mostly all the musicians should be down there helping the cause of the Jena Six problem. Or even just show there respect. Today the whites think that the black rapper only think about killing. So if more people are down there helping then it might change the mind of the whites and make a difference.

And for the second question i think that the people in Jena are mad at John Mellencamp because sence that town is very racist so when the white guy wrote the song the town got mad because he should be on the white people side not the blacks and i believe that this is wrong just because that someone dosnt agree with the rest of there other people they want to charge him.

I think that people should not be mad because he expressing his self thought a sing and thats what he wanted to do to express his self.yes I will feel the same but than again I wont feel the same because I agree with Julian about that I will have to fight for what is right for me. Then if I know that people will get upset I will say it in respectful way that people will understand what I am trying to say on that perspective or on the Jena case.

1.People are upset or the mayor is upset because he doesn't want people to know the issue going on because he doesn't want people to stop coming to Jena. The mayor wants people to come and have a good time an keep coming but if they know what happen people are going to stop coming.

2. I DO NOT AGREE

Anonymous said...

yes I think that famous people should use there rights because his helping the people if you see in the news a lot of people are coming in to support the Jena six his one of those people but he say in a different way but his sold was there you do not have to be there to support Jena six you could do it by the music or art and other thing.

I don't think that just because everyone listens to their music. That
doesn't give him the authority to make songs about something like that.
Their people just like everyone
else. I could see if you were interviewed by someone and they asked you to share your perspective but don't just say something.

I think like why would people be upset of John Mellencamp song. I mean if blacks were the cause of the murder or hispanic I mean they wouldn't mind if John Mellencamp acused us of something. But the fact the white student are the cause people that listen to his songs are white and don't agree making there people look bad. There should be racism not all are racist not are should be blame but people need there rights.
If u can do something make a change no matter what.

I do not think it is wrong to stand up for what you believe in, However I do think many people can and will be offended but it. I do not think anyone has the right to tell you whether or not if you can speak out on something they don't believe in.
I do think that the mayor makes a good point in saying that he was defaming the country of Jena, Louisana. In a way I also do not think he was right to just come out
on Mellencamp because other people protest.....

Anonymous said...

yes i think that musicans can use their music status to write about whats going on because maybe people from other countries might not know whats going on and all he is trying to do is get people around the country to be informed not just residents of Jena Lousiana. I think people where mad at his song because there use to hearing his song about the united stated and stuff and not what is going on not about what going on in his country. to be contnied....

Message music is basically music that gives out a message. It is music that lets people know whats going on and whats the artists perspective to the situation. If its in music people would notice the artists perspective to a situation.
