Immigration and Citizenship
Read the following quote from your Civic textbook and respond. (6-8 sentences)
"An immigrant who wishes to become an American citizen must be able to read, write, and speak English." (page 56)

In the united states alot of people speak english. immagrants should learn that language so they can get jobs and under stand things.In every job and place u need to speak,write read in english.It will make the immagrant thats coming alot easier.theres alot of places where u have to fill appications and another stuff.
I think that an immigrant who wishes to be American citizen should be able to read,write,and speak English because if they can't do all that then the other people wouldn't be able to work wit them cause they wouldn't be able to respond to them.They will probably think there talking about something and there really talking or asking them something important.That's why I think that immigrants who wishes to be an American citizen should be able to read,write,and speak English.
That's true because they should do the same things that other United States citizens do. We know how to read. We know how to write and speak english. That's what us American's do. If you live here you should do the same as america. I dont think No one should have special treatment.
i don't beleave thats this is true because before you knew about them living in the U.S you didn't say nothing about them having to be able to read and write in english in order for them to live in america because before you knew about them they was paying taxes and you were getting there money but know you got them for all that they're worth you want to try to get them to take a literacy test or send them back to the country they came from since you toke all of there money.
How is somebody who came from a different country know how to speak English that quick. It's true put it would take them a long time to be able to speak and understand English. In some way it's fear and in another it's not. It' kind of fear because they do need to speak English to get around. But they should have the test in their language and then later on when they learn English they should take the test again in English. But it's not fear because if they went to a different country and they needed to speak that language to be able to get in the country. And i do thing that they should limit the questions on the test.
I think that yes it is a law and the government makes people go by it. However, I do not agree it is true because if we had people that only spake English It'd be plain. If people didn't bring there culture to America we wouldn't have curtain foods or traditions. I think it is also not fair because why do they have to fell like they are obligated to speak English and they can't speak there own language . But also a lot of time people do get defended and think they are saying things and making fun.
I understand that they do need to speak English to be able to get around but they wont be able to learn english that fast and the people should know that they have relatives who can help them get around.
I feel that this is some what of right and not at the same time because because some people come from anther country to be free.If they come from a place they don't know what English is they probably doesn't know that is a language that people speak.Also an immigrant should know how to read and write.Also an immigrant needs time to learn you just can't teach them overnight.I will be hard for people to come in a country and noy know.
My perspective is that it depends how long they are giving to an immigrant to learn English because it takes a long time to learn another language besides yours i can say this for experience. So in order for an immigrant to learn English they need enough time.
What i got to say is what is the difference between a U.S citizen and a regular citizen i think everyone is a citizen. We all should have the same rights. what i got to say is what if your country is very poor and don't have the money to get a education, and they try to come to the U.S and get it why do they want to say no they cant come. The U.S should be glade that people want to come here and on were else.
No i don't agree with that. I don't agree with this statement because like how are we gonna expect someone to read and write and talk english if they don't learn that in there country. So i really don't agree , yeah they have to sonner or later learn the language after living in the U.S for awhile. But you can't turn immigrant back to there country because maybe they don't know the language. They should at least have a couple of years in the U.S to become a citizen. But they should never be sent back for being a immigrant. Maybe they had danger in there country but i don't agree with this statement.

I think the statement is true. I myself will feel bad for an immigrant to be in a country where you can't read, write, or speak the country's language . To me it would just feel weird to me if I feel like an outcast & not use to the customs. I am between two different opinions of my own. It would not be ok for some one to came to a country and did not feel welcome or comfortable. Then I also do not want them to be turned away if they cannot read, write, and speak English. It would not be fair to do such as that. So there are 2 different perspective on the statement for me. What do you dudes and girls think?
I agree that they should be able to speak English. I am saying this because if they are talking to someone who speak English how are they going to understand each other. They may speak the way they want when the are at home with their family. Also they should know how to read and write because someone can tell them to sign something for them. The person could had been having them sign the paper that say they agree to get one of their legs and arms cut off for them. They also should know how to write because they can not get a job if they don't know how write. They might have to sign papers to get the also to get a house. This is way I agree with this.
No!! so why don't they make sure the people that already living here learn to read and write English. Stop spending your time with people who's coming here and worry about the people who's already here. Thats their job!

I think someone being able to read and write is something that everyone should be able to do. If you are not be able to read or write and you come to American you will make more homeless. If you are a kid and you can not read and write that is ok thats why they have school for kids.

Dear Melissa, I agree highly with your statement. I think you should keep up your good thoughts. I do agree that they should have a test in there language and then when they learn English a little more and the take a test. I should've thought of that, that's a good idea
What I think about these statement is that when immigrant come to any state they are not going to learn to speak the language so fast.The other thing that I want to say is that immigration should help the immigrant with a program that help immigrant to speak any language they need to learn .But the other thing I want to say is that the Immigrant that know how to speak the language they should go and take the test because that will do a good to your self and you could do things that you could not do.
I think that is true because if you don't know speak English how are going to get around in the state you living in.If you can't read how are you going go place because if you need to read the sighs in place.

what that means to me is a person that comes from another country and wants to be able to read, write and speak English to fit in to our country. If you want to come in America any way you have to learn those things to pass to have a legal status in the USA. Some immigrants wish that because they want to live a better life for there family and part of that is learning those things. To help your family learn those things so that they could probably come down to the USA. Being an immigrant is also a part of our citizenship because a lot of people with out us knowing are immigrants and it's only fair if we give them credit for us to have this country there apart of what our country is about. But not all adults or children knows how to read and write yet because if they want to be a legal resident then they have to but then you might not want to be a legal resident but it not always.
Ms.Jackson I say no to your comment because look at the bumms on the street they don't know how to read or right I don't think some of them don't even have a elementary education .

No not all american citizen adults no english and most of these adults are our parent. so what if our parents were the immigrant will they have to be sent back because they don't know how to read write or speak english. No you got look at things in the immigrants point of view. sooner or later they were learn .
No not all citizens know how to write or read but, they should learn how to read and write. Their kids are going to ask them read something for them and sign something for school.

True but do you think an immigrant should be required to learn English? What if he/she wants to only be fluent in their home language?

Joyanne mad a really Good point and am happy for their food, I am happy that people from other countries bring their language.
